The Workplace of Tomorrow – Office Technology

For those that have been in the workforce for some time now have probably noticed that the office furniture that we spend most of our working days lacks one crucial element…where is the integrated tech, and I’m not talking about the power outlets we plug our Apple and Android devices into. I am talking about the, “Minority Report” tech, intelligent screens which allow us to work in a virtual environment and manipulate virtually anything using just our hand motions and our mind…it is 2015 is it not? Growing up I pictured the 2000’s and beyond as a world of flying cars and fully automated households. Is that not what Hollywood promised us…?

Well reality is far from this of course, and it could take while. As technology rapidly remakes most parts of our lives, the furniture industry remains largely slow-moving and low-tech. For many manufacturers, mid-century furniture designed 60 years ago still qualifies as “modern.” And large portion of the blame falls on the manufacturers for being reluctant to adapt with the growing technology trend. At least up until now, manufacturers like Steelcase are investing heavily in research and development of products that will bring them to the forefront of the evolution of office furniture as we know it. Products like Media:Scape by Steelcase are just a small example of where tech and furniture are heading.

We are still a long way from virtual environments, at least in the commercial space, but amazing things are happening. Corporations are starting to embrace a new way of thinking about their office environment and understand the value in integrating high tech. And Steelcase is taking advantage, they have hired some of the brightest minds dedicated solely to technology innovation and tech design in furniture.

AFD_steelcase_VIAAnother amazing showcase of Steelcase’s commitment to tech integrations is V.I.A or Vertical Intelligent Architecture. Yes it is a glass front wall system used to divide rooms in a commercial setting, however it has the ability to fully integrate with a host of technology components both analog and digital. Offering a true collaborative experience all the while maintaining acoustical privacy second to none.
Steelcase also offers a room scheduling solution called Room Wizard II, “RoomWizard II is a scheduling system that provides a solution that manages open and closed collaborative spaces far more effectively than first-come-first-serve. Now users can book rooms and reserve meeting spaces knowing there won’t be a hitch, making it easy to get the most out of collaborative spaces. RoomWizard provides information about room usage and patterns to help make smarter decisions about meeting spaces.”

These are just a few of the high tech products Steelcase has to offer, and as more manufacturers adapt to this growing need one can only wonder what can be next. We all know the technology exists, it’s just a matter of time before it makes its way to the design of the future office.
